One of the basic
mechanisms of aging of the face is loss of volume (atrophy),
which occurs mainly around the mouth and central facial region.
This atrophy results in flattening of surfaces (for example, the
cheek to the side of the nose and below the eyes) that were more
convex (raised) in youth. The area around the mouth actually
shrinks, resulting in thinner lips and sinking of the chin.
The FAMI (Fat
Augmentation by Muscle Injection) is a new method of natural
facial volume augmentation that restores youthful contours. The
key to FAMI is the placement of the patient's own fat cells into
or adjacent to the superficial muscle layers of the face. It is
perfectly natural for fat cells to reside within muscle tissue,
and volume augmentation at this level provides a totally natural
look.
A major
advantage of the placement of fat cells in the muscle layer is
that the fat cells survive very well and provide permanent
improvement with very few treatments. Traditional fat
augmentation requires multiple treatment sessions (frequently 5
or 6); with FAMI only 1 or 2 treatments are usually needed.
Another great advantage of FAMI is that there is generally no
bruising and much less swelling in the days following the
procedure.
