Red blemishes on
the face are usually due to dilated blood vessels. The most
common are telangiectasia ("broken blood vessels"),
simple linear red vessels frequently found around the nose and
mid-facial areas. These vessels are best treated with lasers or
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) sources and respond poorly to
conventional electro-surgery. Dr. Langdon uses the
state-of-the-art Vasculight, a unit that combines an IPL with a
long pulse Nd:YAG laser. Larger, difficult to treat veins near
the nose can be effectively treated with the Nd:YAG laser,
whereas smaller vessels (even tiny capillaries that cause
diffuse flushing) can be cleared with the IPL modality.
Vascular
birthmarks are also due to dilated blood vessels that are very
closely clustered together. These include port wine stains and
hemangiomas. These lesions are very effectively treated with the
IPL and Nd:YAG laser functions of the Vasculight.
